That site’s render is probably the droopiest, most disappointing render of a BRZ86 that I have ever seen.

What happened to “heavier engine ruins the balance”????

Could be worse...

Maybe they’d prefer sales to being “right”.

Has a kinda of Aston vibe

Most sources I have read have said it is getting an NA version of the 2.4. This further confirms to me that it is getting a 2.4 but I still doubt it s getting the turbo.
![]() 01/14/2020 at 17:26 |

The plan has been to use a NA version of the 2.4, which is very similar to the 2.0 currently in the car but should provide an extra 20-40hp and more importantly 30-40lb-ft of torque.
I do not believe that they’ll have a turbo option. If they do, I’ll buy one (hell, I’m planning on buying the NA version a couple of years after launch).

The back’s alright and would actually work well on a futuristic MR2 . The front? No. Kill it with fire.

I’ve heard na 2.4 is coming

I do hope it gets a more powerful or at least characterful engine. Something like in the ND2 Miata that is actually a joy to wind out if it’s not forced induction.
My previous Si had similar low power but it was at least fun to push the motor hard which I haven’t found to be the case in the BRZ/86.

W atching to see how the second gen pans out. I put 55K miles on an FR-S I bought the first week of USA sales in 2012, might be up for another. Experiences in a S2000, Miata (ownership) and Elise since then certainly raises the stakes.
![]() 01/14/2020 at 17:30 |

I mean... you could get 55 more HP out of the engine they have now without more weight.

I would be pretty surprised if this article was right. First, the TNGA has been a snoozer of a FWD platform so far, second that render is pretty ugly.
The added power would be welcome, but not if it melts into a mediocre compact chassis with an anime face.

I wonder if this is too little too late for the model. Is the market at large (the people who would want more power) still paying attention?
![]() 01/14/2020 at 17:34 |
|
Could convince the ones that have wanted one but
have held off because it’s down on power.

eww.... hmmm...
![]() 01/14/2020 at 17:36 |

Don’t know how many those are, but I hope it’s enough to keep the car around. I don’t want one, but I prefer a world where small driver’s cars exist.
![]() 01/14/2020 at 17:39 |

Thats what I always thought, but what I said earlier was the original argument from Toyota as to why we didnt get a more powerful engine.
![]() 01/14/2020 at 17:40 |

Just drop the WRX’s motor in the current car...
![]() 01/14/2020 at 17:45 |

What, this? I at least see only a 25% increase in fake vents, which we have to count as a win at this point.
![]() 01/14/2020 at 17:49 |
|
Good to see that it will get the bump to midrange punch that it desperately needs.
![]() 01/14/2020 at 17:49 |

They also said there were not enough resources for them to develop the supra on their own... and the n a subsidiary of a rival made a whole bespoke mid engine platform that will share almost nothing with anything else they make and charged supra level money for it.
‘It can't be done' is something we hear from them a lot. I'm not gonna buy it the next time they whip it out.

Best part is brand new, unsold C7 GS now cost $50-$60 k
What a time to be alive....

What if all manufacturers said “screw it” and installed LS engines in their cars from factory?
![]() 01/14/2020 at 18:05 |
|
I sure hope so, but only because it will cause current gen BRZ prices to drop.
![]() 01/14/2020 at 18:07 |
|
Sure sure. I believe exactly none of this report. Toyota Underpinnings? What RWD chassis does toyota have to call on here? TNGA b/c? Those are FWD. I guess you could argue that since the prius has an AWD option that there is room, but the eawd in that car is TINY and there is no driveshaft.
![]() 01/14/2020 at 18:11 |
|
Yup... it will get the 2.4L FA... but just watch how it will come out with no turbo and only make 215HP... With an extra 5hp in STI trim.
YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!

Feels more like a sending off finale edition... that thing is like 8 years old with no major mechanical changes. I’m not even sure if it got a refresh either.
![]() 01/14/2020 at 18:27 |

It doesn’t just
drop in. For starters it is too tall for the engine bay - at the very least the top-mount intercooler would need to be relocated and even then the turbo -
which is on the underside of the FA20DIT -
might still sit too close to the ground. Also they use different transmissions.
The Toyobaru twins use a Toyota transmission with a different bellhousing bolt pattern than the WRX. What is
amazing to me is that they designed the thing in such a way that the turbo motor couldn’t easily be dropped in down the road.

Still too little, too late. Yawn.
![]() 01/14/2020 at 18:43 |

Could be.
![]() 01/14/2020 at 19:02 |

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I hope that’s an optional motor, not the base motor.
![]() 01/14/2020 at 19:51 |

I could have forgiven the lack of a liftback if they had ever given us a turbo option, but I gave up and bought an ND Miata instead. The 86 is definitely off my radar now.
![]() 01/14/2020 at 19:53 |

I’d prefer an ND as well.

It’s not a modern car design until the entire front of the car is:
A. a featureless slab
B. entirely made of grilles and/or vents, 80% of which is covered and therefore nonfunctional
![]() 01/14/2020 at 21:06 |

I would 100% buy one if it had that much power. I’m 100% serious and I would love to see them do it.
That said - I refuse to get my hopes up.
Do the right thing, Subaru. Make me a first time Subaru owner.

given the project was started in 2008, like the crz part of me wonders how much weight was thown at these projects in the days of $ 4-5 gas only to read the long term gas prices totally wrong

I want an ND, but... kids.

Yeah, highly suspect.
